My first career was with the American Heart Association (17 years). Our rule of thumb was to line up sponsors first. The sponsors were the underwriters of the event. Sponsors covered all expenses so that 100% of the participants fees go to the cause. It’s easy to do if you are supporting a good cause. For a lot of reasons, be sure to let the organization and ask them if they would like to promote the event to it's members.
